First off, buyers should be aware that this trade paperback measures 6 inches wide by 9 inches high, and thus is smaller than the ‘conventional’ graphic novel dimensions of 6 ½ x 10 inches.‘Omnibus: Volume 2’ compiles issues 14 – 24 (December 2010 – August 2012) originally published by DC Comics. All issues were written by Karen Traviss, with assistance from Joshua Ortega, with artwork by Pop Mhan, Leonardo Manco, Colin Wilson, and Julius Gopez.The content depicted in these 11 issues takes place after the events of Gears of War 2, but prior to Gears of War 3 (which was released in September 2011). Without disclosing spoilers I’ll state that some of the issues are standalone stories (featuring ancillary characters like Jace Stratton, Colonel Hoffman, and Adam Fenix).The major story arc, comprising six issues, is ‘Dirty Little Secrets’, which deals with the desperate effort by the COG to counter the rise of the Lambent through the clandestine development of a super-weapon. ‘Dirty’ ties in with the main plot of Gears 3.The plots and characters in these 11 issues will be familiar to anyone who has played the Gears franchise, and offer no big revelations or surprises, which is not unexpected given the strictures imposed on licensed properties. Anyone who has finished Gears 4 and Gears 5 will readily grasp the underlying storyline that is only alluded to in these comics.The artwork is well done, retaining the dark and gritty qualities of the first 10 issues of the comic book franchise. I found the plotting of these final issues lacked the intense, run-and-gun qualities of the initial installments, perhaps due to an obligation imposed by Epic Games / Microsoft on DC to craft a prelude to the events depicted in Gears 3 (rather than going in a more independent direction).Summing up, if you’re a fan of the Gears of War franchise, then you’ll likely find the issues compiled in Omnibus: Volume 2 to be entertaining and perhaps useful in filling in some of the backstory associated with the Gears 3, which remains a very playable game some 9 years after its release. If you are not necessarily a Gears fan, but appreciate military-themed sf, then you also might want to consider taking a look at Volume 2.
